Hidden Secrets Of Japanese Swordsmanship introduces the Omori Ryu set of kata of Muso Shinden Ryu.  This is the first set of kata in Muso Shinden Ryu, and forms the foundation for everything that follows in the art.  Roger Wehrhahn, a student of Mitsuzuka Takeshi for over 20 years, has done a marvelous job of presenting the fundamentals of Muso Shinden Ryu through these kata.  He covers everything from the wearing of the sword to final bow at the end of practice.  In between he shows each kata in detail, explaining the critical points of each.  He also explains what is happening in each of the solo iai kata by demonstrating them with with partners and bokuto.  This brings the kata to life so that the intention and lessons to be learned in the practice of the solo kata are clear.  This is a wonderful tool for anyone who practices Muso Shinden Ryu, or who is interested in iaido.

Iai-jutsu, also known as iaido, battodo, nukiuchi, among other names in old Japan, is the art of drawing and using the live blade. Sekiguchi Takaaki is the 21st head of his line of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, as recognized by the Nihon Budokan. In this excellent DVD, he introduces the art of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu. Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu is an ancient art, dating the the mid 1500's and includes many sets of kata for training in the use of the katana. Some of these kata deal with the drawing and use of the live blade, and other teach the principles of timing, spacing and strategy. In this DVD, Sekiguchi Soke introduces and teaches the first set of kata, called the Shoden. This is the foundation of the art, where all of the fundamentals are taught. He covers the basic techniques of handling the sword before moving into teaching the 12 kata of the Shoden. Finally, Sekiguchi Soke demonstrates test cutting, the practice of checking your control of the sword by cutting targets.
