This is the story of one of the great martial artists of the 20th century. Mrs. Judo is the story of Keiko Fukuda, the last student of Kodokan Judo founder Jigoro Kano and the first women to be awarded 10th dan in judo. This documentary is her story, from Tokyo in the 1930s where she started judo to America and her journey through the traditional world of judo. In a time when women just didn't, she was invited to study judo by Jigoro Kano himself.

Fukuda Sensei trained at the Kodokan and rose to the rank of 5th dan, the highest rank then awarded to a woman. Following a trip to the US to teach judo, she was invited to stay permanently. She remained in the US, teaching judo and perfecting her own technique, inspiring generations of students to master judo.

Minoru Mochizuki was one of the great martial arts founders of the 20th century. A student of both Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, and Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, Mochizuki went on to study karate and classical Japanese martial systems as well. Eventually he founded his own system, Yoseikan Budo, as a synthesis of all that he had learned. This excellent video introduces the kihon practices and techinques of Yoseikan Budo. Of particular interest is a demonstration by Mochizuki Sensei himself.

Kosen Judo was a style of Judo practiced by the 7 Imperial Universities of Japan from 1914 through World War 2.  It focused on newaza (ground techniques) and drawing the opponent in, and those who trained in it were renowned for the power of their newaza.  Few of them are alive now, but this DVD was made by one of the great masters of Kosen Judo, Kosaka Mitsunosuke before he died in 1998.  From 1967 until his death he taught the techniques and strategies of Kosen Judo at Nagoya University.

Kosaka Shihan breaks his instruction into several sections, covering all the major points of Judo newaza.  His instruction is clear and easy to follow, and excellently filmed. Some aspects of what he teaches are nearly unheard of outside Japan.

Goju Ryu Karate is one of the most powerful forms of Karate born in Okinawa. In this DVD release of the first ever film of Okinawan Goju Ryu, demonstrated by well known teacher and author Morio Higaonna, 11 kata are demonstrated, many with bunkai (analysis of the application). The kata demonstrated are Sanchin, Gekisai 1, Gekisai 2, Saifa, Seienchin, Shinochin, Senseru, Saipai, Kururunfa, Suparinpei, and densho. The DVD finishes with demonstrations of kumite.

In this excellent video Yokokyama Sensei demonstrates the fundamental kata and the traditional kata of the nunchaku. He also demonstrates the basic strikes and postures, as well as the strike points. Also covered is the proper way to use the nunchaku for continuous action and double nunchaku.

Motobu-Ryu is one of the first styles of karate to be taught outside Okinawa.  The founders of Goju Ryu, Matsubayashi Ryu and Wado Ryu all studied with Motobu Choki.  This DVD features demonstrations by the current head of Motobu Ryu, Motobu Chosei.  The full name of the art is Nihon Denryu Heiho Mobobu Kenpo.  Known for its uncomplicated movements and speed, it is well suited to kumite practice.
